Movie Review of Mr. Woodcock (2007) [PG-13] 87 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $6.75
If proof were ever needed to illustrate that big name celebrities in a film cannot assure its commercial success, Mr. Woodcock would prove the best example. Starring Billy Bob Thornton and Susan Sarandon, both Academy Award®-nominees, the film is tanks early when it becomes clear it has three repetitive jokes and no idea where to go with this smarmy story. The premise, as the trailer leaves no doubt is about a mentally and physically abusive gym teacher named Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton) who leaves his emotional scars on his students decades after they graduate from his class. One of his students, John Farley (Seann William Scott) grows up and writes a best-selling self-help book about letting go of your past....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Movie Review of The Brave One (2007) [R] 119 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
In baseball and California, it's three strikes and your out. The three strikes against the 2007 Neil Jordan-directed The Brave One starring Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard, are in no particular order:
1) Death Sentence just came out two weeks ago with a very similar plot.
2) Neil Jordan tends to be brilliant at the artistic parts of his films and characters, but this didn't blend very well with a gritty vigilante film.
3) The film could pass as an excellent character study, but as for a morality play it falters big time with an ending that's nearly impossible to accept as the logical course of action for these characters.
It's too bad because, Jodie Foster delivers one of her most interesting, gutsy, emotionally tangled performances since her Academy Award®-winning performance as Clarice Starling in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs. Terrence Howard proved, yet again, he could be given the role of wallpaper designer for hospitals and he'd turn it into something compelling....continued...or read the spoiler points...

What's a guy with a scruffy beard, trench coat, and years of British special opps training supposed to do? Naturally, you stow the carrot and go after her. Moments later you find yourself embroiled in a full on destructive onslaught where the only way out is going to involve you killing off a dozen shooters and delivering the baby firing a quick round to sever the umbilical cord and put the crying newborn in the arms of his mother....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of The Hunting Party (2007) [R] 103 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.75
What if you were one of the world's most recognized television news reporters due to your heroic or fool-hearty willingness to venture into the eye of the maelstrom that is a war zone to interview the people most directly impacted and get footage no one else would even dream of daring to acquire using your trusty sidekick and gonzo cameraman to do some of the real dirty work? Then you would be journalist Simon Hunt (Richard Gere) and his equally award-winning cameraman, Duck (Terrence Howard) in Richard Shepard's film, The Hunting Party, inspired by the Esquire magazine article, "What I did on my Summer Vacation" by Scott Anderson. Simon and Duck have been there and done that when it comes to reporting the stories from the front lines for years on the network evening news. All of this, however, has come with a heavy price for Simon who, one day, while reporting from Bosnia, loses it on air despite attempts by anchor Franklin Harris (James Brolin) to save him from himself, and is promptly fired by the network....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of Away from Her (2007) [PG-13] 110 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: Canadian actress, director, writer Sarah Polley has assembled a lovely, dignified tribute to the life of a couple who share the wife's gradual slip into the tight grip of Alzheimer's. The story, told with flashbacks, is of Fiona (Julie Christie) and Grant (Gordon Pinsent). He, a former professor and she his devoted wife, have lived, safely retired, for 20 years, in an idyllic cottage. Their days pass glowingly as they ski, read, and basically enjoy each other's company, until the telltale signs of her illness set in. Julie Christie's portrayal is as lovely, wonderful, and spirited as any role she's ever had. Gordon Pinset, the acclaimed Canadian actor, creates Grant's role part from devotion, anger, frustration, and intrigue. There can be nothing more agonizing than watching a beloved one slip down a dark well slowly. The film may assist those going through equivalent situations make more sense of it all.
