Movie Movie Review of Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) [R] 95 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $8.75
With a fairly straight-forward if not somewhat genre-derivative plot, the Resident Evil series, facing its own extinction, did little with the final installment of what some hope and some fear will be the last incarnation of the computer game-turned film franchise to suggest otherwise. Perhaps, entitling it Resident Evil: Extinction, wasn't such a genius idea. If you didn't see the previous films, it's ok, this one presumes that and sort of brings you up to speed on what's going on....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of The Kingdom (2007) [R] 110 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
A tremendous action film with heart-pounding suspense, Peter Berg's long-in-development, The Kingdom storms onto the screen with an edgy Danny Elfman score and some sound-bite history of the Middle East since the 1940s. After that, the scene changes to a pastoral company softball game in the middle of an American Oil Company family compound in Saudi Arabia. Two police officers are shot and killed in their vehicle and replaced by imposters. They drive the vehicle past checkpoints and into the compound with their machine guns blazing killing anyone and everyone in sight. With the police and National Guard officers (who share the duty of protecting the compound and its inhabitants) confused over the shooting, it takes the quick action of Sergeant Haytham (Ali Suliman) to ram the attackers' vehicle stopping them in their tracks. Unfortunately, the distraction was intentionally designed to allow a suicide bomber to embed himself in the middle of the most populated area and detonate a killer explosion as the meticulous planners, under the thumb of fictional Saudi terrorist Abu Hamza, watch from a nearby apartment tower—their video camera on high speed....continued...

Movie Review of Mr. Woodcock (2007) [PG-13] 87 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $6.75
If proof were ever needed to illustrate that big name celebrities in a film cannot assure its commercial success, Mr. Woodcock would prove the best example. Starring Billy Bob Thornton and Susan Sarandon, both Academy Award®-nominees, the film is tanks early when it becomes clear it has three repetitive jokes and no idea where to go with this smarmy story. The premise, as the trailer leaves no doubt is about a mentally and physically abusive gym teacher named Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton) who leaves his emotional scars on his students decades after they graduate from his class. One of his students, John Farley (Seann William Scott) grows up and writes a best-selling self-help book about letting go of your past....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of Dragon Wars: D-War (2007) [PG-13] 90 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.00
Considered the 'George Lucas' of Korea, Writer / director Hyung-rae Shim's latest film, Dragon Wars: D-War, really does share a lot in common with the Star Wars films. Let's be honest, as much as the Star Wars franchise has become a national treasure and phenomenon, the actual acting, storyline, and dialog in the original Star Wars film was not that great. It was the special effects that captured people's imaginations. Dragon Wars: D-War falls about 15 steps down into the cellar in this comparison, yet, it does deserve some notice for bringing some new mythology to life as well as for the exceptional CGI work. It's too bad that Mr. Shim didn't get the writers from the year's spectacular Korean creature feature, The Host, though to help him punch this script up to being more worthy of the incredible sums of money that must have been spent on the CGI for this film. Literally, the final 30 minutes is as CGI-driven as Transformers. Nonetheless, there's no reason to rake this film over the coals excessively. The acting, story, and dialog came out amateurish, no doubt, but give the artisans involved some due and recognize they are a couple of decades behind in these areas, but right at the forefront when it comes to the rest of the technology....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Knocked Up (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: If you saw Judd Apatow's film The 40-year Old Virgin and you liked it, then you'll have a good chance of loving his film Knocked Up which, though somewhat raunchier than its predecessor, is an even better film because of the more balanced approach. The story is a bit overly contrived entailing the consequences of a one-night stand between Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl), a normally incredibly fortunate entertainment news reporter, and Ben Stone (Seth Rogen), a Jewish Canadian illegal immigrant. Filled to the brim with Apatow's style of crude comments, jokes, and ideas it has some hilarious, rolling on the floor laughing scenes and some touching, Hallmark® moments. Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl make the perfect unlikely couple highlighted by Rogen's comedic timing and Heigl's foil for his nonchalant, irreverent style. Judd Apatow has done it again only better.
