Movie Review of Feast of Love (2007) [R] 110 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.50
Speaking only of the film version of Feast Of Love, directed by Robert Benton from the screenplay by Allison Burnett, conjures notions and contemplation as to what love really is. Bradley Thomas (Greg Kinnear), the story's main character, asks something to the effect of is love a cruel trick played on humans to get us to reproduce or is everything there is the only reason for this crazy dream we're in? Better answer the second one if you are to be his soul mate. The plot, which is less a contiguous story and more an ethereal glimpse into the lives of couples in a college town in Oregon, concerns the falling in and out of love that people naturally experience over the course of a relationship no matter how long or seemingly strong. Bradley loses his female partner of 6 years to another woman with whom she has an almost electric and immediate connection one afternoon after a softball game....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of The Kingdom (2007) [R] 110 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
A tremendous action film with heart-pounding suspense, Peter Berg's long-in-development, The Kingdom storms onto the screen with an edgy Danny Elfman score and some sound-bite history of the Middle East since the 1940s. After that, the scene changes to a pastoral company softball game in the middle of an American Oil Company family compound in Saudi Arabia. Two police officers are shot and killed in their vehicle and replaced by imposters. They drive the vehicle past checkpoints and into the compound with their machine guns blazing killing anyone and everyone in sight. With the police and National Guard officers (who share the duty of protecting the compound and its inhabitants) confused over the shooting, it takes the quick action of Sergeant Haytham (Ali Suliman) to ram the attackers' vehicle stopping them in their tracks. Unfortunately, the distraction was intentionally designed to allow a suicide bomber to embed himself in the middle of the most populated area and detonate a killer explosion as the meticulous planners, under the thumb of fictional Saudi terrorist Abu Hamza, watch from a nearby apartment tower—their video camera on high speed....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) [PG-13] 106 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.50
One day, while walking expeditiously through the neighborhood Barnes & Noble, a book title shouted out just enough to reach my peripheral vision. "The Jane Austen Book Club," it read as if aloud. My fingers reached for the book instinctively, though the back of my mind knew all too well the policy -- never read the book before seeing the movie. The fingers retracted leaving the book on the shelf. And, now, never has seeing a movie made me want to read a book more, for the film version of The Jane Austen Book Club is an absolute treasure and cinematic delicacy of writing and acting wit. With a certain understated pretense, the idea hooks you and reels one in like a rainbow trout who can sort of work out the probable result of this encounter but no longer get away even if he wants to....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Bug (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $7.25
Review-lite: William Friedkin directs the long-delayed, Ashely Judd / Michael Shannon film Bug about a shy former military guy who invades, in the most clandestine way, the life of the ex-wife of a guy in the pen taking her down with him as he endures a complete paranoid mental breakdown believing that he is the victim of a government conspiracy to test a new form of biological weapon on him. What bugged me most about Bug was not the pointless, stupefying ending, but rather the clever marketing scheme that drew me in with such high hopes. Big mistake. If a film is not that good, better to keep the expectations low and garner the term "better than expected" rather than the alternative. Fine performances by Judd and Shannon and Harry Connick Jr. aside, this film conjured more laughter than horror. (click for full details and complete review) • (click to purchase Knocked Up)
