Movie Review of The Seeker: The Dark is Rising (2007) [PG] 94 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.50
Obviously, some are hoping Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series will be able to follow in the venerable footsteps of Harry Potter and create a huge film fan base following. The problem with this is that the former, print-wise, has not captivated the world to the same degree, and it might just be partly because Susan Cooper's unique mythology she invented for her books, at least as they have been translated into the first film, is a bit too convoluted and hard to make much sense out of. Without having read the books, perhaps, filmgoers may spend much of the film literally 'in the dark' as much as are the characters as to what's going on....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review of Across the Universe (2007) [PG-13] 131 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.50
To say you've never seen anything like this might sound a bit like hyperbole, but really, you've never seen anything like this. Julie Taymor, best know to millions who bore witness to her incredible conceptualization of Disney's® The Lion King for the Broadway stage, got the idea to re-examine the 1960s through the lyrics of the decade's most influential musical group, the Beatles. She narrowed their archive down to just 33 songs from which emerged a new story focusing on the characters of Jude (of "Hey Jude") and Lucy (of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds")—transcontinental soul mates who discover each other when Jude leaves Liverpool to track his American G.I. father now working at Princeton who abandoned his mother before his birth and ends up crashing into Lucy's older brother Max on the campus. They meet, officially, on Thanksgiving, but Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood) is devoted to the boyfriend she's just seen march off to serve his country in the Vietnam War. When he's killed just before a leave, Lucy abandons all concerns for her provincial life and decides to join the new college drop out, Max (Joe Anderson) and Jude (Jim Sturgess) at their apartment in NYC....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review of Eastern Promises (2007) [R] 100 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
While the title and the trailer mislead a bit as to the story and wonder of Eastern Promises, the film turns out to be an interesting thriller with one major twist. The power of the David Cronenberg-directed film, though comes not so much from the twist as it does from the subtle psychological moments of the principle characters. An English midwife of Russian descent named Anna (Naomi Watts) finds herself in the middle of a complex chess game played with the lives of real people by the vory v zakone (Russian Maffia) in London when a young, pregnant girl named Tatiana arrives at her hospital and dies during delivery. The only clue to her history lies buried in her diary written in her native language of Russian. Anna tries to get her uncle Stepan (Jerzy Skolimowski) to translate it for her, but he refuses believing it unwise to rob the secrets of the dead. In the diary, she finds a card for a restaurant called the Trans-Siberian and she goes there seeking to learn if anyone there knows anything about this young girl....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) [R] 124 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.25
The Valley of Elah is the place where David fought Goliath and serves in the case of the title for Academy Award®-winning writer / director Paul Haggis's film, In the Valley of Elah, as a reference to a little guy trying to stand up to a very much bigger guy. Unfortunately, in the film, David sadly does not slay Goliath (but you'll have to visit the spoiler points to find out more on that. The film begins with a call from a military base in New Mexico where Mike Deerfield (Jonathan Tucker) has just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. Mike has gone missing, and he might be A.W.O.L. Mike joined the army to follow in the footsteps of his former M.P. father, Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones). What he didn't know was that his time in Iraq would transform him from a warm and loving son into someone else. Not wanting to waste any time, Hank kisses his wife and mother of his two sons, Joan (Susan Sarandon) goodbye, and heads from their home in Tennessee where he is a now a gravel hauler to the base. He arrives in record time and asks to see his son's quarters. Sgt. Dan Carnelli (James Franco) shows him around and introduces Hank to some of the men in Mike's unit. Hank swipes Mike's cell phone from his desk drawer knowing that he's committing a crime in doing so. Around this same time, the police have discovered a body in a field about 30 miles from the base. It has been dismembered and burned nearly beyond recognition....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review of Feast of Love (2007) [R] 110 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.50
Speaking only of the film version of Feast Of Love, directed by Robert Benton from the screenplay by Allison Burnett, conjures notions and contemplation as to what love really is. Bradley Thomas (Greg Kinnear), the story's main character, asks something to the effect of is love a cruel trick played on humans to get us to reproduce or is everything there is the only reason for this crazy dream we're in? Better answer the second one if you are to be his soul mate. The plot, which is less a contiguous story and more an ethereal glimpse into the lives of couples in a college town in Oregon, concerns the falling in and out of love that people naturally experience over the course of a relationship no matter how long or seemingly strong. Bradley loses his female partner of 6 years to another woman with whom she has an almost electric and immediate connection one afternoon after a softball game....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: The Fantastic Foursome is back with a brand new villain known as the Silver Surfer. The Surfer is determined to destroy our planet, and the only ones who stand a chance of stopping him are, of course, Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Thing, and The Human Torch. With outstanding visual effects, the film sets new standards of expectations for films that follow to top these. The one major drawback stems from too much soap opera for nearly a third of the running time was confined to either touch-feely lines or social lives.
