Death Proof (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: Quentin Tarantino deserves a huge box of Kudos® for Grindhouse, in general, and high praise for his writing of, directing of, and acting in the Death Proof segment. What fun it must have been to make. An aging, psycho stuntman named, Stuntman Mike, and played intelligently and with physical prowess by Kurt Russell, builds a Death Proof stunt car. Then he sets out on a course to haunt women. Why is a mystery only the missing reels can reveal. Reminiscent more of Stephen King than traditional Tarantino, this is a case where seemingly ordinary people just go a bit crazy with horrifying results. Overall, Death Proof can surely be added to the list of great Tarantino cult films that will withstand the ages. It's not his finest single work to be sure; but, again, set in the context of the Grindhouse experience, it's great entertainment, absorbing from beginning to end. Movie Review of Gracie (2007) [PG-13] 95 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.00
Review-lite: An intensely personal experience for sibling actors Elisabeth and Andrew Shue, Gracie, attempts to capture the sense of their own lives after the tragic loss of their eldest brother, William, a Columbia High School soccer star. Unfortunately, the writing and casting blended poorly reducing the picture to an incongruous mélange of displaced and misplaces emotions on the cusp of a corner kick that must go in to ensure success for women in the sport of soccer. Young actress, Carly Schroeder, who was given the leading role, never seems quite up to the challenge of endowing Grace with the mental and physical toughness necessary to achieve the character's true goals. A far cry from last year's excellent We Are Marshall, this film fails also to distance itself from now all too common films about people overcoming tragedies in sports.(click for full details and complete review)

Knocked Up (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: If you saw Judd Apatow's film The 40-year Old Virgin and you liked it, then you'll have a good chance of loving his film Knocked Up which, though somewhat raunchier than its predecessor, is an even better film because of the more balanced approach. The story is a bit overly contrived entailing the consequences of a one-night stand between Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl), a normally incredibly fortunate entertainment news reporter, and Ben Stone (Seth Rogen), a Jewish Canadian illegal immigrant. Filled to the brim with Apatow's style of crude comments, jokes, and ideas it has some hilarious, rolling on the floor laughing scenes and some touching, Hallmark® moments. Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl make the perfect unlikely couple highlighted by Rogen's comedic timing and Heigl's foil for his nonchalant, irreverent style. Judd Apatow has done it again only better. We Are Marshall (2006) [PG] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.75
Review-lite: We Are Marshall is not the latest inspirational football movie of the year completing a quadrilogy including Invincible, Facing the Giants, and Gridiron Gang. The film, rather, is better described by lasting impact it has based on the overall experience. Frame by frame, line by line, actor by actor, idea by idea, perhaps, the film has plenty of flaws. The overall impact, the lasting emotional feeling it has on the whole of one's soul is, rather, the case for We Are Marshall. Based on the true story of one of the most terrible tragedies in the history of collegiate sports, the film begins with a quick, but effective, introduction to the team before they board the plane for their ill-fated journey. Director McG, using Jamie Linden's screenplay, has filmed a remarkable story. Emotionally charged and bittersweet, the film induces introspection and leaves a lasting impression on ones heart and soul. (click for full details and complete review)
