Fracture (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Despite a delicious cast of Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling, Fracture suffers itself from a hairline fracture that eventually causes the film to leave more of a headache than a sense of satisfaction after witnessing what should have been one of the most perfect murder movies ever made. Chalk it up to the idea that serendipity is the true source of perfection in film not concoction. A distracted Gosling barely holds a candle not so much to Hopkins but even to his former performances. Meanwhile his character is too flawed in a split allegiance to the all might dollar vs. civil service as to make him a worthy and credible hero. The too perfect crime unravels as does the too perfect film in the end. (click for full details and complete review)

The Lookout (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: Possessing the feel of an indie film, The Lookout stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jeff Daniels in a story that seems to borrow it's Midwestern, rural, isolated, edginess from the Coen brothers' Fargo but without the charisma and flawless accent of Frances McDormand. Oscar®-nominated screenwriter turned director Scott Frank's debut film is, nonetheless, a powerful and complex film that is gripping with a nagging sense of predestiny. Undoubtedly, flaws aside, The Lookout is still a good movie, occasionally in spite of itself. The gruesome outcome pushed the boundary on what one might commonly accept for a story that teaches ethics and principles at the core. Relying not on gimmicks or twists to satisfy, rather it hones in on the actual responses and attributes of the characters themselves. The film delivers emotionally and leaving one wondering why it took so long for Scott Frank to take a turn in the director's chair. (click for full details and complete review)

Vacancy (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.00
Review-lite: How many creepy, middle of nowhere, western USA motel films do people have to see before they get it through their thick skulls that bad stuff always seems to happen? Well, probably not too many more for on-the-outs husband and wife David (Luke Wilson) and Amy (Kate Beckinsale) Fox. After getting off the interstate to avoid delays due to a major wreck, they end up at a motel run by Mason (Frank Whaley). Soon after checking in, they are terrorized and find videos of people being victimized in their same room. Unfortunately, what comes next is a cat and mouse game that, while scary, doesn't really go that well. There's something missing from Vacancy, directed by Nimród Antal based on a script by Mark L. Smith. It's a film with a better concept and better acting than the story and film turn out to be. (click for full details and complete review)

Wild Hogs (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $6.50
Review-lite: Touchstone Pictures' newest film, Wild Hogs features the cross country escapades of four men during their collective mid-life crises: William H. Macy, Tim Allen, John Travolta, and Martin Lawrence who cave into teenage male peer pressure of the highest degree doled out by Travolta's character, the ultra cool husband of a swim suit model, Woody Stevens. What must have seemed like a brilliant idea to somebody, unfortunately, under the direction of Van Wilder's Walt Becker and "Arrested Development"'s Brad Copeland's writing, turned out a Route to dumb and dumber instead. The bulk of the humor surrounds an incessant nagging homophobia which most of the men, with the exception of Macy's computer nerd character, wear on their sleeves. A highly disappointing climax to the stale plot involves nothing more than brutal fighting scenes of hand-to-hand combat. This film will be out of sight and mind in fewer than two weeks.
