Are We Done Yet (2007) [PG] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.00
Review-lite: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House starring Carey Grant and Myrna Loy becomes the plot to the sequel of Ice Cube's 2005 comedy vehicle Are We There Yet? called Are We Done Yet?. Don't be too hard on it. It's not spectacular, nor is it disastrous. The movie does a lot of things right--believing in dreams: people taking on risky new careers, teens living in the country away from malls, and most of all family members working together to build a home. Perfect casting of the principles (some recycled from the first film) led to excellent chemistry for their new foil, Chuck Mitchell, Jr. (John C. McGinley). The animated opening sequence was a nice salute to the past as well as were the good-natured aspects of the story that prove Hollywood can still make a decent comedy without foul language, gross-out scenes, and persistent injury to particular body parts. Disturbia (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.50
Review-lite: In this new take on Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, a suburban teen (Shia LaBeouf) ridden with guilt over his father's death takes out his teen angst by going gonzo on his Spanish teacher landing him in 3 months of in-home incarceration. While derivative and recycled the seemingly unintentional homage to Rear Window and other films of teen terror with a bit of romance thrown in, it's hard to deny the guilty pleasures due to the disturbing events of the film. The film relies on constant tension between the kid's suspicions of his scrutinized neighbor Mr. Turner (David Morse) and the fact he could be very wrong. This creates fear and thrill in the true sense lately nearly ignored in thrillers or scary films. While certainly the film is not on the same plateau with Rear Window (the original version), it was still quite good. (click for full details and complete review)

I Think I Love My Wife (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.00
Review-lite: Chris Rock fans be forewarned, this IS your father's Chris Rock. Yep, this is Chris Rock trying to decide if he can still be Chris Rock after all these years. His latest film, I Think I Love My Wife, should have been called "I Don't Think I Should Make This Movie". First off, the film is rather dull. Second, despite valiant performances from co-stars Gina Torres who plays his devoted wife and Kerry Washington who plays Nikki Tru his new love interest (or is she), Chris Rock is not able to be the real Chris Rock. It's not clear who he is or if even he knows. Poor Steve Buscemi is just a fish out of water entirely miscast in the film. If you direct, write, and star in a film, there's got to be a way to know, somehow, if the project just isn't working so well, doesn't there? (click for full details and complete review)

TMNT (2007) [PG] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.00
Review-lite: What was the point of Kevin Munroe making a CGI Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie? Was it nostalgia for those who loved the turtles? Or was this film the hope of luring in a new generation of terrapin acolytes? Alas, the film serves neither audience well. Fans of the franchise will wonder first, "Why the gap?" and second, "Why not let a sleeping turtle lie?" Newbies will wonder, what was all the fuss about? Are these turtles that cool? While the technology and the animation of the film are worthy of the task of resurrecting the Turtles from their hibernation, of course, yet it is the story and some of the voice acting that nearly puts you to sleep. Unaccompanied Minors (2006) [PG] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Pleasantly surprising, Unaccompanied Minors is a movie pitched at pre-teens that parental units can enjoy to a degree until the end when they're likely to be caught sobbing at the joyful ending. Beginning with introductions to the five starring kids: Dyllan Christopher, Tyler James Williams, Brett Kelly, Gina Mantegna, and Quinn Shephard, the film has them eventually ending up in the room literally teeming with other unaccompanied minors stranded in an airport on Christmas Eve by the blizzard of the century. They make the lives of the security forces 'fun' as they escape their confines all in the name of trying to keep the Christmas spirit alive for the younger sister of one of the kids. Paul Feig has made a surprisingly entertaining holiday film from Jacob Meszaros's and Mya Stark's script. It's not quite Home Alone or A Christmas Story, but it's considerably better than it has been reviewed. (click for full details and complete review)
