Movie Review of Pineapple Express (2008) [R] 111 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $3.00
If you've never been a film critic, you've probably never thought about what it's like to be sitting there in anticipation as a film illuminates the screen and as it unfurls minute by minute slowly beginning to realize that there is probably not a single good thing you're going to be able to think of to write about this particular film. Such was the case when faced with the borderline incomprehensibly terrible Pineapple Express. To dispatch that right away, the name of the film comes from the name of the marijuana blend sold by one of the film's two protagonists, Saul Silver (James Franco). While the potent narcotic weed gives the film its title and a good portion of the plot points, that's where the effectiveness of the title ends. A better title for this film might have been: Apatow's Appalling Downward Spiral. I'll admit that I went into the cinema with a Superbad attitude having just seen Step Brothers—another Apatow's gone rotten fiasco film—but there somehow seemed to be hope. …continued…or read the spoiler points…or read 2cOrNot2c…
Movie Review of Swing Vote (2008) [PG-13] 100 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.00
Relative newcomers director / co-writer Joshua Michael Stern and co-writer Jason Richman have gone where few have dared to tread outside of the documentary world with any success. They've delved into the American psyche as it relates to our current geopolitical circumstances and produced a touching cutting-edge, political dramedy that's as inspirational as it borderline implausible. The film possessed the financial support of star and producer Kevin Costner, who portrays, Bud Johnson, the only man in the USA who voted in the presidential election but whose vote endured a mechanical malfunction leading him to be in possession of the sole vote needed to determine the allocation of the state of New Mexico's 5 electoral votes and thereby determine the next President of the United States. Sure, it's a far-fetched concept, though in the scheme of what USAers have seen and endured in the past 8 years, who knows what could really happen anymore. …continued…or read the spoiler points…or read 2cOrNot2c…
Movie Review of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) [PG-13] 112 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
So, it's been a while since The Mummy Returns and the semi-spin-off The Scorpion King which was really move of a prequel than a sequel to The Mummy franchise helmed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser as the daring mummy slayer Rick O'Connell. Yet, how fitting given that mummies rise from the dead that so does this franchise. And, rise it does in a rousing action-adventure that's everything most people probably thought Indiana Jones 4 was going to be but wasn't because Messers Spielberg and Lucas opted for an authentic look true to the Indy Jones Franchise right down to the lack of really special, special effects—which it was. Unfortunately, since those days we've become so spoiled by brilliant effects to the point where we hardly notice them and can barely live without them. Fortunately, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor's director Rob Cohen felt no such obligation to pay homage to some perceived legacy of the past. Hence, Indy Jones ends up looking like a relic while this new Mummy chapter rocks. In all of the ways that Raiders of the Lost Ark was so cool and special when it debuted, The Mummy: TotDE lives up to expectations and the legacy of the genre. …continued…or read the spoiler points…or read 2cOrNot2c…
Movie Review of Step Brothers (2008) [R] 95 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $7.75
If the best thing that can be said about Step Brothers is that it's better than Semi-Pro, isn't that kind of a problem? Unfortunately, the statement is true nonetheless. Unfortunately, the Will Ferrell / John C. Reilly / Adam McKay collaboration comes nowhere near the par set by their previous collaboration, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby . The plot concerns the union of two families: Dr. Robert Doback (Richard Jenkins) and his son, Dale (John C. Reilly) merge with Nancy Huff (Mary Steenburgen) and her two sons, Brennan (Will Ferrell) and Derek (Adam Scott). Robert and Nancy have big plans to retire and sail his boat around the world. Unfortunately, there's a gigantic kink in their utopian future: Brennan and Dale, newly anointed step-brothers, won't move out of the house and get real jobs. When Dr. Doback throws down the gauntlet and challenges them to get jobs or feel his wrath, it might seem cruel were in not for the fact that Dale's and Brennan's combined age would approximate 77 years. Yeah, these aren't college kids still trying to find their place in the universe, these are middle-aged men in mid-life crisis. …continued…or read the spoiler points…2cOrNot2c…
Movie Review of The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008) [PG-13] 100 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $9.25
"X-Files" fans will probably see the movie regardless. It's hard to see, though, how the film will have appeal beyond those fans. Meanwhile, it's plum difficult to admit that "X-Files" fans are not only destined to be disappointed, they are going to be positively perplexed how the genius of Chris Carter got turned into this pretty awful movie and why David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson agreed to reprise their roles for the film—without which it most likely never would have been made. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
