Movie Review of Gone Baby Gone (2007) [R] 114 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.00
Gone Baby Gone, starring of course Casey Affleck and then Michelle "suddenly red hot" Monaghan, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, Amy Ryan, and Amy Madigan in a screenplay adapted by Ben Affleck and Aaron Stockard from Dennis Lehane's best-selling novel featuring his detective couple of Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro. The story starts out with the mysterious disappearance of Amanda McCready (Madeline O'Brien) from her bedroom in her apartment in the Dorchester area of Boston. Her mother, Helene (Amy Ryan), claimed to police that she stepped across to a neighbor's home after Amanda had fallen asleep, and when she returned some half hour or so later, Amanda was gone. Not believing the police can actually do much, Amanda's Aunt Beatrice (Amy Madigan) and Uncle Lionel (Titus Welliver) hire a couple of local private detectives: Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan) to look into the matter and, perhaps, tap their local connections better than the police might be able to do. At first, Angie is reluctant to help, but she quickly becomes convinced that they can do no harm in helping to find Amanda....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) [R] 160 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.25
While Jesse James's name and Brad Pitt's agreement to portray him probably got the financial reassurances necessary for the greenlighting of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (certainly it wasn't the length of the title), this film is really about Robert Ford and the portrayal worthy of immediate Academy Award® consideration is that of Robert 'Bob' Ford by Casey Affleck. Born 12 August 1975, Casey Affleck is, for the record, presently 32. And, even if the film complete principle photography two years ago, he still would have been around a decade older than his character who was, according to him, 19 nearly 20 for most of the film, making this portrayal all the more remarkable. Historically, Hollywood has been entranced when younger people get in front of a make-up artist and aged to play a role far older, but there's little these artists can do to make an actor look 10 years younger, if they could, everyone in Hollywood would be doing this as a matter of daily survival....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) [R] 119 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
Director Susanne Bier points her lens deeply into the lives of a family rocked by tragedies and the coping mechanisms of the matriarch left to deal with the aftermath. Halle Berry in the second leading role for her this year, plays the mother of two kids: Harper (Alexis Llewellyn) and Dory (Micah Berry) who face the sudden murder of their father during an evening ice cream run. They expect him to go out and come back with treats, instead, he never comes back. The police arrive with the grim news, and Audrey (Halle Berry) suddenly finds herself the victim of a tsunami of emotions. She plans the funeral quickly with the help of her supportive mother, brother, and neighbor, Howard Glassman (John Carroll Lynch). At the last minute, she remembers she's failed to invite the only other person outside the family to whom the event would be most meaningful, her husband Steven's childhood best friend, Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro). Her brother agrees to go and both deliver the news and attempt to bring him to the wake. At first, Jerry is convinced it's a prank....continued...

Movie Review of Why Did I Get Married? (2007) [PG-13] 113 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
It's been actually quite cool to watch the emergence of a bonafide superstar director from his early stages and first major motion pictures. If you're unfamiliar with writer / director / actor Tyler Perry, and a large percentage of USAers, disappointingly, are; then it's time to get educated. He's already delivered one interesting dramatic film in 2007, Daddy's Little Girls, and his Why Did I Get Married? could be the finest 'dramedy' of the year. Not only does Why Did I Get Married feature some great actors, Tyler Perry among them, but it features a charismatic return to screen by superstar singer Janet Jackson as a humble and insightful professor of psychology. The plot concerns an annual retreat orchestrated and inspired by one of Dr. Patricia's (Janet Jackson) books where by she encourages couples that are friends to get away once a year and explore why they got married and what keeps them together....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) [PG-13] 114 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.75
Reports suggest that when Shekhar Kapur first set out to make Elizabeth, a film about England's first power Queen, Queen Elizabeth I, and arguably one of its most magnificent and beloved leaders of all time, he had no idea he was creating but part 1 in what is now set to be a trilogy of films about her reign. Thus, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, suddenly becomes the middle child with all stereotypical implications intact. As the bridge between two films, this story suddenly needed to be less crisp such that a third will be able to clean things up. The main problems with the film are: the plodding plot, the lack of unimaginable urgency, and a Queen embroiled in subterfuge from which she seems to be unable to escape....continued...

Transformers (2007) [PG-13] 144 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.00
Review-lite: You've never seen anything like Michael Bay's Transformers as they are the next evolution in mesmerizing CGI film effects and destined to win awards in all of the technical film awards. The film tracks the life of teenager, Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) as he uncovers a plot to destroy the world by transforming evil robots called Decepticons®. Only the loyal Autobots® led by Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) can save the planet. While the acting and writing for the dialogue left much to be desired, nothing can compare to the visual and auditory sensations this film packs into a powerful, adrenalin pounding action thriller. Not since Independence Day has there been such a great Fourth of July weekend film, and not since Star Wars have the grounds of technical achievement been elevated to a whole new era.
