Movie Review of Michael Clayton (2007) [R] 119 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.25
Jason Bourne screenwriter Tony Gilroy gets his big shot as writer and director for the George Clooney vehicle, Michael Clayton. Most people are either going to either love this film or loathe it. It's that kind of movie. You'll either think it's overly contrived, not very thrilling, sort of seen it all before, George Clooney earning a pay check so he can do movies that make a difference, or you'll find it to be a cross between Erin Brockovich and Syriana, that George Clooney gives one of his most subtle yet engaging performances of his career, and nothing tastes sweeter than watching high-powered lawyers and corporate corruption on steroids bite the dust big time....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review for We Own the Night (2007) [R] 117 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.75
Robert Duvall serves as one of the Chiefs of Police, Burt Grusinsky, for a New York City Department outside Manhattan circa 1988. His older son, Joseph (Mark Wahlberg) has dutifully followed in his father's footsteps after his mother's death. Baby brother, Bobby (Joaquin Phoenix), now using his mother's family surname of Green, has done just the opposite. Bobby has been 'adopted' into a Russian family whose 'Godfather' Marat Buzhayev (Moni Moshonov) owns a fur importing business and a wildly successful night club which Bobby now manages known as El Caribe. Both sons are very good at what they do and have bright futures except for one small problem....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review of Into the Wild (2007) [R] 140 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
The credits and interviews and stories all say that Into the Wild was written and directed by Sean Penn based on the acclaimed book by Jon Krakauer. Really, though, isn't it Christopher McCandless, the tragic hero of the film, who's pulling the strings not just of the actors and crew but of the hearts of those who immerse themselves into his life story? The power of this young man, his outlook on life, his some would say misguided an others inspired dreams of really living, come through well on the boyish face of young Emile Hirsch who plays him 24 hours a day, seven days a week for years. It's difficult not to fall in love with his portrayal and, by extension, Christopher McCandless or, at least, the idea of him. His innocence, his passion, his zest for breathing in life make for a charming and intoxicating human being. Everyone he meets, whether for 2 seconds in a line a homeless shelter or simply upon approach as he paddles down the Colorado River toward the Sea of Cortez attracting the eye of some international tourists cooking hotdogs, everyone who meets him adores him almost instantly. The tragic irony of his life, though, is that he tied cold, poisoned, and alone in the wilderness with which he longed to become one. It's not as if he didn't notice the special people who touched his life along his journey, rather, he seemed to doubt that they could be part of his grand adventure. His re-birth began just after graduation from college, Emory in Atlanta, to be precise, and rather than returning home with his father, Walt (William Hurt), mother, Billie (Marcia Gay Harden), and sister, Carine (Jena Malone), he uses deft subterfuge to hide his whereabouts, donates the remaining $24,000 of his college fund to charity, and heads west in his beaten up old car....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review of The Heartbreak Kid (2007) [R] 115 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $6.00
The Heartbreak Kid reminded me a lot of last fall's The Last Kiss. If this was supposed to be a comedy, shouldn't it have been funny? Next on the list of questions…Whose idea was it to put the Farrelly brothers in charge of a Neil Simon play film remake? The original film debuted in December of 1972 and starred: Charles Grodin as Lenny Cantrow, Cybill Shepherd as Kelly Corcoran, and Jeannie Berlin as Lila Kolodny. The basics of the story seem to be about the same. Believe it or not, but the idea is that a guy really falls in love on his honeymoon, but not with his new wife, with someone else. Instead of Lenny we now have Eddie (Ben Stiller). He marries Lila (Malin Ackerman) sort of on a lark. He meets her in front of a Laundromat near his home in San Francisco when a thief steals her purse, and he plays hero for a day and tries to stop him. He's unsuccessful, but the gesture moves Lila to visit the sporting good store he owns under the guise of needing a new jacket. An awkward moment between Eddie, his real-life and character's father, Doc (Jerry Stiller), and Lila leads them to a real date....continued...or read the spoiler points...
Movie Review of The Seeker: The Dark is Rising (2007) [PG] 94 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.50
Obviously, some are hoping Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series will be able to follow in the venerable footsteps of Harry Potter and create a huge film fan base following. The problem with this is that the former, print-wise, has not captivated the world to the same degree, and it might just be partly because Susan Cooper's unique mythology she invented for her books, at least as they have been translated into the first film, is a bit too convoluted and hard to make much sense out of. Without having read the books, perhaps, filmgoers may spend much of the film literally 'in the dark' as much as are the characters as to what's going on....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Evan Almighty (2007) [PG] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.50
Review-lite: Were it not for some low-brow bird-dropping and tool mishap scenes, Evan Almighty would be an entirely splendid film. Terrific performances by Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman with a great supporting cast including John Goodman and Lauren Graham, phenomenal special effects including a cast of thousands of animals, all buoyed a story with a truly lovely and significant moral tale. The film is a dose of just what we need right now, as a society, to remind us of our real purpose in life and of the need for us to elect politicians into power that will strive to honor and uphold both our Constitutionally protected rights and values while simultaneously modeling good stewardship for our planet.
