Movie Review ofDan in Real Life (2007) [PG-13] 95 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $10.50
What is real life? Ever felt set up to really love a movie by the preview and then feel entirely let down? Well, be prepared for Dan in Real Life, it's just that sort of film. This bittersweet comedy and, with all due respect, most of the best comedy is in the preview, falls quite a bit short of expectations. It's not really that hard to see the flaws, either, which makes one wonder how it wasn't apparent to everyone involved. The story focuses on a single father, Dan (Steve Carell) who lost his wife to some illness four years earlier, struggling to raise three daughters: Jane 16ish (Alison Pill), Cara 14ish (Brittany Robertson), and Lilly 6 (Marlene Lawston). He's a local life columnist, sort of the Dear Abby for single parents. It's early fall, you know the time when everyone in New Jersey heads up to Rhode Island to help their parents close down the summer house causing their kids to miss school and driving their teachers crazy. Never mind that, Jane's upset because dad won't let her test out her new drivers license, Cara's very mad because she'd really rather stay and smooch Marty Barasco (Felipe Dieppa) her science lab, er lip locking, partner with whom she's fallen desperately in love during the course of the past three days, and Lilly, well, she's just six and still thinks her dad's pretty cool.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review ofSaw IV (2007) [R] 95 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $8.75
Saw III was my introduction to the Saw franchise. Admittedly coming in on the phenomenon late, it took some time to get caught up on the mythology and history. Most surprising was that, aside from the excessive gore, there was something about the intelligence behind the film that made Saw III stand out in the genre. When a lot of money is being made as well, it stood to reason there would be a Saw IV; but, as is so typical, as the original creators move 'upstairs' due to past success, often the original vision and concept morphs beyond all recognition leaving die hards frustrated and newcomers lost in the dark. There's probably no way to really comprehend much of what is going on in Saw IV without, at least, having seen Saw III. So, if you are compelled to get in on what has become the new 'Halloween' film for Halloween, make a quick trip to the video store first.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Reservation Road (2007) [R] 102 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.50
There is no possible way to imagine or even come close to comprehending the way one would feel if one were to be involved in the hitting and killing of a small child in a car accident, though director / co-writer Terry George will try to give some idea of the experience through the eyes of a man who commits this very crime, albeit accidentally, in his film adaptation of John Burnham Schwartz's novel, Reservation Road. The film opens with a cello performance by child prodigy, Josh Lerner (Sean Curley). After the recital, the Lerner family: Ethan (Joaquin Phoenix), Grace (Jennifer Connelly), Josh, and Emma (Elle Fanning) and a jar of fireflies will head home. Emma, being the youngest, will need to go to the bathroom along the way, forcing a pull-over at a local gas station just shy of home. And, it is here that the fates of two families will intertwine as attorney Dwight Arno (Mark Ruffalo) will be driving home his weekends-only son, Lucas (Eddie Alderson) from a late Boston Red Sox game and in swerving to avoid another car, Dwight will run head on into Josh who left the car to free the fireflies as his mother suggested.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Rendition (2007) [R] 120 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.25
In no uncertain terms, Director Gavin Hood brings us a stirring and gut-checking film that commands attention. Knowing full well that the USA is far from perfect, most citizens do, but for more than 20 generations, people have grown up under a belief that by using fundamentally sound abiding principles as outlined in the Constitution of the United States of America and the Bill of Rights all of which speak to greater truths which hold themselves to be self-evident, we would never find ourselves, our military, our government on the wrong side of things. However, fear of Communism (which was never proven to be a real threat to the sovereignty of the United States) and now fear of terrorism has caused our legislators elected and appointed to diminish our rights and to take our government and military down paths our Founding Fathers would most certainly find both horrifying and devastating to the principles under which the nation was founded.....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review for The Comebacks (2007) [PG-13] 85 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $3.00
Billed as a spoof of the greatest sports movies from the producers of the Wedding Crashers, The Combacks is marginally worthy of the first claim and as for the second, well, mentioning producers as a film's only reason to be seen might be a bit dubious in the first place, and after the credits rolled might be more of a disclaimer in the future. The story roughly speaking is about the comeback of a hapless football team of misfits call The Comeback and coached by a complete loser of a coach named Lambeau Fields (David Koechner). Somebody should have told David Koechner this was a comedy because he's as moribund and morose a football coach as has ever been seen....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Meet The Robinsons (2007) [G] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: Disney's animated film, Meet the Robinsons is a Stephen J. Anderson film based on the short book A Day with Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce. The film's story is about an orphaned boy genius inventor named Lewis (voiced by Daniel Hansen and Jorday Fry) whose dreams of getting adopted are clouded when a mysterious boy from the future named Wilbur arrives to protect him from the villainous Bowler Hat Man. A subsequent trip to the future and meeting with Wilbur's family gives Lewis the family he's always dreamed of, though the story seems borderline pointless and misguided, and the characters seem overdrawn, confusing, and hapless. That is until the secrets are finally revealed and the resulting in a spectacular CGI film achievement. Though the villain may be too frightening for younger children, the film overall carries some wonderful messages that should stick with children a very long time.
