Movie Review of American Gangster (2007) [R] 157 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.50
Despite having two super-charged performances from Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, American Gangsters, quite simply, is kind of a drag. Part of the problem, and there are many problems from which to choose, is that Director, Ridley Scott, likes to make slow-moving epics; and that, frankly, is what he's best at. Should a gangster picture be a slow-moving epic such that its running time of 157 minutes actually feels like 257 minutes? Most people would probably politely decline to answer the question. Second up there's the problem with the story. The story isn't sure what it's trying to tell. It's not a feel good story about a smart guy who works his way from the bottom of the feeding pond to the top-floor penthouse as was Will Smith's The Pursuit of Happyness. No, it can't be that because the main character, also a real person, is gangster Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington). He didn't make it to the top of his game with just his smarts, he used guns, murders, and drugs. Likewise, its not a feel good story about the lawyer cop who helps bring him to justice, Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), because while Richie might be the most ethical cop in the history of New England, his personal life is far, far from it.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Lars and the Real Girl (2007) [PG-13] 106 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.75
The story begins rather innocently. Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) leads an offbeat seemingly mundane life. After his father passed away, he and his brother, Gus, inherited the house. As Gus (Paul Schneider) and his wife Karin (Emily Mortimer) are about to have a baby, they move into the house, and Lars moves into the garage. Lars goes to work every day in his cubicle job doing what ever it is he does to earn his basic living. He interacts, though aloofly, with his co-workers but shuns the obvious advances of the 'new girl' Margo (Kelli Garner). He prefers to keep to himself, something that Karin cannot quite comprehend. For all her well-meaning moments, she tries desperately to unlock the enigma that Lars has become. But her attempts mostly fail as he defeats her kindness with simple stoic responses. Things are odd, but life in their small upper Midwestern town are pretty routine. That is until Lars receives a large crate in the mail one afternoon while at work.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Sleuth (2007) [R] 86 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.25
Already an Academy Award®-nominated film for Best Acting in 1973 and starring Michael Caine, how deliciously intriguing to update and remake the film, this time from a Harold Pinter script, Mr. Caine in the elder role, and Jude Law in Caine's former role. Adapted from the play by Anthony Shaffer about a jealous older English gentleman who confronts his wife's lover directly ensnaring him in a clever game of cat and mouse, Mr. Pinter has crafted a delectable mind play that affords the two main actors the rare opportunity to do stage on screen.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of 30 Days of Night (2007) [R] 113 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $10.00
Imagine if you were a vampire, and it was true that exposure to the sun light caused your instantaneous incineration. And imagine you wanted to keep people thinking your kind was just a myth, but you still need to feed every so often. Where on earth would be your perfect hunting grounds? How about Barrow, Alaska which, each winter, endures 30 Days of Night? No daylight, too isolated for help to arrive in time, and plenty of pickings corralled up like cows awaiting the slaughter. Sounds to good to be true, but apparently the leader of the clan, a nasty, cold, blood-thirsty vampire named Marlow (Danny Huston) figured he'd give it a shot.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Dan in Real Life (2007) [PG-13] 95 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $10.50
What is real life? Ever felt set up to really love a movie by the preview and then feel entirely let down? Well, be prepared for Dan in Real Life, it's just that sort of film. This bittersweet comedy and, with all due respect, most of the best comedy is in the preview, falls quite a bit short of expectations. It's not really that hard to see the flaws, either, which makes one wonder how it wasn't apparent to everyone involved. The story focuses on a single father, Dan (Steve Carell) who lost his wife to some illness four years earlier, struggling to raise three daughters: Jane 16ish (Alison Pill), Cara 14ish (Brittany Robertson), and Lilly 6 (Marlene Lawston). He's a local life columnist, sort of the Dear Abby for single parents. It's early fall, you know the time when everyone in New Jersey heads up to Rhode Island to help their parents close down the summer house causing their kids to miss school and driving their teachers crazy. Never mind that, Jane's upset because dad won't let her test out her new drivers license, Cara's very mad because she'd really rather stay and smooch Marty Barasco (Felipe Dieppa) her science lab, er lip locking, partner with whom she's fallen desperately in love during the course of the past three days, and Lilly, well, she's just six and still thinks her dad's pretty cool.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Spider-Man 3 (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: With an overly ambitious, series finale-esque approach, Sam Raimi has packed a lot into two hours twenty minutes. The film is filled with great successes and minor disappointments. No doubt it's a special effect dream world that will probably play beautifully in video game form. With the themes of the duality of human nature and the need for forgiveness omnipresent, the film shows both the fun and dark side of the characters making for a film that entertains as much as it might provoke disdain. Nonetheless, if this is the final film, it has ended in good fashion, tying up loose ends and giving us most of what we wanted and needed to see.
