Movie Review of August Rush (2007) [PG] 104 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.50
The kernel idea, the germ of narrative for the amazing story of August Rush is that there is a harmonic musical connection between all living things and that if a little, orphaned musical prodigy can just play his song loudly enough, his parents will hear and find him. It's a truly lovely notion, and given this, the story will automatically tug at your heart strings. Below this story, though are the parallel stories of 4 adults, all of whom suffered obvious complications when it came to their own growth and development such that each stands in his or her own way as an obstacle toward the reunion of the boy and his parents. It is in these menagerie of grownups that the film's story falters creating needless and even sometimes wicked conflict veering off the central story too far.…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Hitman (2007) [R] 100 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.00
Those who remember Skip Woods's screenplay for Swordfish will know that he knows his way around a cold thriller with a steely villain. So, who better to pen the screenplay adapted from the video game series, Hitman? From the opening sequence which provides all the back story on the birth and 'education' of Agent 47 we'll ever really get, to the chain of cataclysmic events for which he is the brilliant catalyst, Hitman is the runaway action thriller of the year. While Matt Damon's Jason Bourne may have propelled him to the cover of People Magazine as the 'Sexiest Man Alive', watch for Timothy Olyphant to not only wrest him from that title, but also as the most excellent spy 'hero' since James Bond. Posessing the skills and resources of a Bond/Rambo hybrid, Agent 47 is a professional hitman, part of an ultra-secret world force that keeps the planet in order and on the 'right' path by simply eliminating anyone who would stand in the way of that course. Abandoned and unwanted boys from the worst parts of the world are apparently taken into the organization, numbered, bar-coded, and bred for one specific purpose, to kill. And the best of the best is Agent 47 (Timothy Olyphant).…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Crazy Eights (2007) [R] 80 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $9.50
It's too bad that co-writer / director James Koya Jones didn't get some studio support because the core story for his Crazy Eights on a basal level works far better and is far more interesting than say, Eli Roth's Hostel I or II or even the more accomplished Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes films (not the remakes the originals). Truly it does. The film opens with an idea, true or not, that sometime in the middle of this century, families in the southern USA would turn over their children to government run experimentation facilities that would subject them to a battery of tests and studies for a stipend. Most of these children, according to the film, were never heard from again. Fast forward to the present, as a gang of old friends, late thirty-somethings, who are gathering at the funeral of one of their own named Brax. Once there together in his home, it turns out he's left them a map to a time capsule they made as kids.…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Nightmare Man (2007) [R] 94 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $4.25
The sponsors of the After Dark HorrorFest deserve some kudos for including Rolfe Kanefsky's Nightmare Man in this year's slate. While the acting is mostly atrocious made worse by dialogue that seems intended to be used by college students in drinking games, the film nonetheless has the following pluses—they no way nearly offset the negatives but then again, this is a campy horror film: (a) a couple of really scary moments, (b) a couple of good twists, and (c) an understanding that this is to be used as escapist fluff not Academy Award®-winning drama. Therefore, as dismissible as the film is in the grand scheme of things, it's still a bit of juvenile fun. It also offsets some of the other more horrifying films of the fest with some laughs (intentionally or unintentionally to be sure).…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Love in the time of Cholera (2007) [R] 138 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.25
People who read and fell in love with Gabriel García Márquez's acclaimed novel Love in the Time of Cholera have eagerly awaited a suitable adaptation of the massive novel for film. Ronald Harwood, who adapted Oliver Twist most recently, seems like an excellent choice to handle another literary masterpiece. Mick Newell who recently directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire--many people consider the book a future literary masterpiece--also seems like a good choice to direct. Obviously, there are going to be things cut in shaping down the raw elements necessary to make the book work as a film. Many of us were coaxed into reading the book as part of the curriculum for Spanish IV. I recall thinking that a book too hard for most people to read in English wasn't going to work too well for me in a second language. We mottled through somehow, but not much stuck through all these years. This is no reflection on the talent nor writing style of Sr. García Márquez—I don't remember a word of The Sun Also Rises which I read a few years later in college. In any case, as I prefer not to have movies ruined by books, I'm glad the memories of Love in the Time of Cholera has faded over time to allow for the experience of the film to stand out new. And, I'm fairly certain, I'll never forget the film.…continued…or read the spoiler points…

Hairspray (2007) [PG] 107 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.75
Review-lite: A risky notion, updating a cult-popular film from the late 80s with a decidedly gorgeous 2000s cast in a summer of heavy-hitting blockbusters. Who could have predicted that it would be the summer's first great comedy and most lively (non-special effects-driven) film and the first to actually deliver on its promise? Featuring a great cast including the divine John Travolta, Michelle Pfieffer, James Marsden, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Christopher Walken, the wondrous Queen Latifah, and new comer Nikki Blonski, lively music, perfect dancing (choreographed and directed by Adam Shankman), the film soars with both brilliant and timeless social agendas as well as terrific historical reminders to keep us all on a progressively forward path. So far, the most fun to be had at the movies this summer. (click for full details and complete review) • (click to purchase Hairspray)
