Movie Review of The Golden Compass (2007) [PG-13] 113 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
Amidst a storm of controversy stirred up by those who view award-winning author Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, the first book of which was called The Northern Lights and changed to The Golden Compass to be decidedly anti-Christian, the film should open to typical epic numbers in December fueled inadvertently by the controversy and by the traditional success of such during the family Holiday film season. Despite the controversy, and there have been many defensive statements released suggesting the religious overtones from the book have been toned down in the film, the story resembles, not surprisingly, so many other timeless epic stories with children as the heroes, only this time with a young girl in charge. Her name is Lyra Belacqua, and she's portrayed forcibly and convincingly by young Dakota Blue Richards. One can see shades of a dynamic and potent actress in the young girl as her character carries the fate of her world on her shoulders, so does the actress carry the weight of the picture. Both take some warming up to. She's a tad prickly at first, but as the story progresses, the character matures and the girl settles into the role. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of No Country for Old Men (2007) [R] 122 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.50
Let's start this review with the summary and say Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men adapted from Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name has electrifying characters and performances in some of the most amazing scenes of dramatic, knuckle-clenching, foreboding tension most people will have ever seen in their lives. Reflections, however, on the first viewing led to the deduction that there must have either been a missing reel or something in the theatre ventilation system that induced a lengthy slumber causing everyone to sleep through some parts because the climax and dénouement simply weren't very rewarding. Alas, a second viewing revealed neither to be the case, effectively rendering the film a catastrophic disappointment--to get so close to perfection and then lose it? Not having read the book, maybe this is the way Cormac McCarthy wanted it. Maybe he wanted to build up all this incredible tension with three destiny-bound, classically imitable characters only to leave the story flailing in the winds of some trite social statement of good versus evil in these changing times. If so, then it seems unfair to blame the Coen Brothers for sticking to the original narrative except that they should have realized this would not make a lot of viewers of the film very happy. Or maybe it will. People who like arty, inconclusive, spectacles may bask in this one.

Movie Review of Awake (2007) [R] 78 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
Apparently nobody wanted to compete with Joby Harold's debut dramatic film Awake starring Jessica Alba and Hayden Christensen giving it a rare opportunity to open a weekend virtually alone in the category of major motion pictures opening on the weekend of 30 November 2007 uncontested. Such treatment is generally reserved for blockbuster films like Transformers in the summertime; and, yet, here this compact, 78-minute film stands alone the weekend after Thanksgiving in the USA. Well, there's no accounting for the scheduling prognosticators who tinker away at the film release calendar to the point of driving any of us trying to post up a reasonably accurate listing nearly bonkers, and so it is that Awake is out there for everyone to see. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of I'm Not There (2007) [R] 135 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.50
When honing in on the inner strength necessary to commit to the decision to see a semi bio pic of an American music icon of such stature as Bob Dylan, one might sit a priori and contemplate the outflow of hard-earned capital approximating $20 US after transportation, concessions, and ticket are all factored in versus 135 minutes of what may or may not amount to an entertaining and insightfully relevant cinematic experience especially if one is not exactly a fan of Dylan in the first place. Compound that with the, at first glance, high concept, albeit seemingly brilliant dimension that the writer/ director has conceived the film as something other than a straight-forward romp through the trials and tribulations of the star's life in the vein of James Mangold's Johnny Cash introspective Walk the Line; rather, in Todd Haynes's case, his film would be inspired by the life and music of Dylan as portrayed by six different actors exemplifying in some imagined way the various stages of Dylan's evolution as an artist, musician, folk hero between the years of roughly 1959 to 1978 and named after one of Dylan's most obscure but fan-coveted tracks, I'm Not There.…continued…
Movie Review of Lust, Caution (2007) [NC-17] 157 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.25
After a romp in the mountains of Wyoming, Chinese director Ang Lee return to the central kingdom of him homeland to take up a story by Eileen Chang which focuses on the a pivotal time in modern Chinese history—the Japanese occupation of Shanghai. Just before the climax of World War II, the Japanese were moving strong in taking over much of eastern China. They maintained order from a distance via an occupational government plum full of Chinese collaborators. The intended assassination of one such top collaborator by a resistance faction of university students in Hong Kong becomes the central narrative river for this moving and elaborate yet tumultuous tale of a young woman coming of age and sacrificing very essence of self for the patriotic endeavor. Wang Chia Chi (Wei Tang) places a seemingly clandestine phone call from a western coffee shop in Shanghai to her second brother. As she returns to her seat and dabs perfume on the nape of her neck and bottoms of her wrists, she travels back through the memories that brought her to this time and place.…continued…or read the spoiler points…

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Had this been the story for the Curse of the Black Pearl, PoC would have suffered the same sad box office fate as Disney's other ride-turned-film mishap The Haunted Mansion. Unfortunately, in this third film be it chapter 3 or part two of chapter two, loses focus on what really made the other two so spectacular: Johnny Depp's Captain Jack and his rollicking, hilarious misadventures. Gone is the adventure, gone is the hilarity, in place we have a predictable climax, under-utilized stars, and a relatively boring, 168-minute film that may leave you eager to volunteer to walk the plank to escape.
