Movie Review of Juno (2007) [PG-13] 96 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.75
Fans of writer / director Jason Reitman's irreverent, biting, deeply satisfying satirical comedyThank You For Smoking need be prepared for something totally different in Juno. One of the more singular character driven comedies of the year, Juno features actress Ellen Page, most wickedly known in Indie circles as the girl from Hard Candy and to the non-Indie crowd as the trouble-making Kitty Pryde from X-men: The Last Stand--the latter being a far less exemplary example of her talent than the former to be sure, as a high school girl who finds herself positively pregnant after a casual, one-evening encounter with this boy she kind of knew from the track team named Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). In conversations with her very best friend, Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno becomes convinced not only to keep the baby, but to find some nice parents for it in the Penny Saver under "Desperately Seeking Spawn" as Leah jokes. Her working class parents, Mac MacGuff (J.K.Simmons) and Bren (Allison Janney) take the news of her pregnancy with subdued shock actually hoping that her big announcement will be she's in hard drugs or something, but not this. The Penny Saver leads Juno to Mark (Jason Bateman) and Vanessa Loring (Jennifer Garner)—a 'happily' married couple that has been trying to conceive a child and then, after numerous failures, trying to adopt a baby for a long time. Upon meeting the couple, Juno feels she's found just the 'perfect' people to take over the responsibility of her baby. The rest of the story deals with Juno's emotional states, strengths and weaknesses, joys and sorrows as she works through the stigma of being an unwed, pregnant, juvenile.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Lions for Lambs (2007) [R] 88 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.50
According to Professor Stephen Malley (Robert Redford), the expression "Lions led by lambs" comes from comments made by German soldiers in reference to the British grunts who fought so valiantly under the command of lesser men. Given that this expression evolves to Lions for Lambs and then becomes the origin of the title for Matthew Michael Carnahan's screenplay adapted by Robert Redford for the big screen, it's hard to comprehend how people could view this film as being Anti-war or Anti-American. The film is neither. Rather the film, which plays more like a sophisticated college course lecture than a traditional film, is a call for thought. Just as Professor Malley urges his reluctant student Todd Hayes (Andrew Garfield) to step up to his potential, the film does everything it can to urge us all, not just USAers, but all of humanity to spend more time thinking about our actions and their subsequent usually unpredictable consequences--no matter how well-intentioned or believably righteous. Yes, the film does lecture, and sorry but sometimes that's just exactly what people need.…continued

Movie Review of P2 (2007) [R] 98 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $7.25
If you've never seen a film about a mentally deranged guy who holds a woman prisoner because, in his own mind, they are meant to be together and she'll fall in love with him if only she will give him the time of day, then see P2. It's not a terrible way to be introduced to this genre—is it a genre? If you've seen one of these types of films before, then you may just prefer to skip it. The key difference to this one is just the setting—it takes place in the parking garage (level P2) of a Manhattan skyscraper on Christmas Eve. In this version, the workaholic, Angela Bridges (Rachel Nichols) gets a visit from a boss-like guy, Bob Harper (Simon Reynolds) where he apologizes for groping her inappropriately after the Christmas party claiming he'd simply had too much to drink. She accepts his apology, but sticks around the office longer trying to get work done in and amongst calls from her pesky family in New Jersey wondering why she's not left work yet. Eventually, just as she's ready to leave, she runs into the night security guy, Carl, who startles her. She asks him to escort her to the lobby which he does. They say good-bye, and she heads down into the parking garage. Her car, on level 2, won't start, but parking security guy, Thomas (Wes Bentley) aims to please. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Fred Claus (2007) [PG] 116 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $9.00
"Ho, Ho,…Hmmm?" What starts of with some promise, quickly unravels as this homespun tale of Santa's older brother Fred enters the realm of the macabre. Fred Claus, directed by David Dobkin from a script by Dan Fogelman featuring the combined talents of Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Rachel Weisz, and Academy Award®-winning Katy Bates and Kevin Spacey, worked only insofar as none of these actors were on screen. That's right, it pretty much doesn't work except when it's just the elves dancing around and then only because the special effects used to make the life-sized actors of John Michael Higgins and Ludacris look elf-sized. Where's all the Christmas spirit and winter holiday joy? It got left back in the core idea that this story would be about Santa's older brother who, because of a childhood run-in with his 'saintly' younger brother, becomes a bitter, angry, resentful, isolated virtual conman.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Martian Child (2007) [PG] 108 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.25
There was a time, back in the days of Terms of Endearment, Ordinary People, and Kramer vs. Kramer, when a film like Menno Meyjes's Martian Child starring the brother – sister acting team of John and Joan Cusack, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt and the kid, Bobby Coleman would have had a real lock on a Best Picture nomination. It has all the 'right' ingredients for that era: a dramatic, life-changing story, a kid and a dog, great human-interest angle, tense moments, a universal theme (alienation), and actors who really absorb their characters and become them.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Ratatouille (2007) [G] 110 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: Writer / director Brad Bird of The Incredibles fame is the man behind Ratatouille creating a remarkably rich tale (tail?) about a rat named Remy whose ambition in life is to become a great French chef. As if that weren't sufficiently challenging for the little guy, he must do so while avoiding every human-induced calamity known to ratkind from a shotgun-toting granny to knife-wielding chefs. Curiously short of female characters and full of ominous and foreboding villains, the film should not be viewed by younger children without precautions. Older children and adults will find the film hilarious and imaginative. The technology of the animation has upstaged the Pixar geniuses' previous all-star creation, Cars quite handily. Standouts among the voice cast included Patton Oswalt as Remy, Peter O'Toole as Anton Ego the nasty French food critic, Lou Romano as Remy's human marionette, Linguini, and Janeane Garofalo as Collete.
