Movie Review of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007) [G] 93 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.00
If you don't remember reading Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium as a kid, it a good thing because you didn't. Though it sounds like a classic children's novel turned film and is even structured like a book with clever chapter titled sequences, this was Zach Helm's screenplay first and a novelization second. The drawback of going this route is that the story, characters, and wondrous nature have not survived the test of time like Charlotte's Web, for example. Therefore, there's not built-in fan base of people who remember this children's classic from their childhood. Instead, it something we've all got to get used to; and, unfortunately, it takes too much time to get used to with too little pay off in the end. Moreover, while billed clearly as a magical film for little kids, either the themes are a bit advanced or after the sense of wonder associated with a magical toy store wears nearly completely off, little ones are bound to be as ready to escape the theatre as the store's bouncy balls.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Beowulf (2007) [PG-13] 113 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.25
Let "I am Beowulf" become the next catch phrase for the youth of today and watch a twinkle in the eye of English Literature professors the world over as their 3183-line poem becomes a major event and the first feature-length, 3D motion capture, IMAX® film ever made . Robert Zemeckis, the wunderkind director of some of the most enjoyed films ever such as the Back to the Future trilogy, Forest Gump, and Cast Away, has been leading the world down a new path in the realm of a specific genre of animated films known as motion capture where the actors wear special suits with microdots to input their every movement into a camera and then computer. This allows for perfectly lifelike motions of the characters, but it also allows for something else. As we saw in Peter Jackson's LoTR trilogy, specifically the character of Golum (Andy Serkis in a motion caputure suit) and then in his King Kong (again Andy Serkis), the process then allows the computer animators to enhance or alter the physical appearance in any way they see fit. The technique has purists worried prompting last year's changes to rules as to what is eligible for the Academy Award® for best animated film and probably the Screen Actors Guild too over concerns as to how far we are from not needing actors any more. If Beowulf is any sign of things to come, it would seem like we are not that far for you've never seen more realistic human animated creations in your life. Every hair on Beowulf's beard looks real. His body is incredible. Grendel's mother's not too bad herself.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) [R] 117 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.75
Let's get a couple of things straight. First, Sidney Lumet has had an outstanding career as a director spanning 5 decades, and there are some people that will stand up brilliantly for his films regardless. Meanwhile, there is also a tendency among all of us, to overlook things in large scale projects that could have been better or which bring the project down for those that are not so invested in being fans of a particular director, architect, band, etc. As it turns out, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, has to fall into this category. You've really got to be a huge fan of either Mr. Lumet, one of the lead actors (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, or Marisa Tomei), or the writer Kelly Masterson, to love everything about this film. And, hopefully, I don't need to state that this review is my opinion, but the film is too flawed and ultimately emotionally bankrupt to be considered as some have touted, the Best Film of the year. No way. Sorry. The devil is in the details, and the details in this film just never even come close to adding up even if one decides that that beginning is really the ending and that this detail alone, is really worth the whole film. There's actually no logical notion except that the beginning is really the ending.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of The Deaths of Ian Stone (2007) [R] 88 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.75
As part of the After Dark HorrorFest 2007, The Deaths of Ian Stone stands out as being more of a cross between The Forgotten and the Bizarro World's version of Ground Hog Day. It all begins with Ian Stone (Mike Vogel), an American hockey player in London bearing the sweater number of 17—perhaps not relevant—missing the game-winning goal as time ran out. He gives his girlfriend a ride home; but, enroute to his own flat, he encounters a body in the middle of the road. When he tries to help the body startles him. Jumping back into his Jeep®, he attempts an emergency phone call, but gets plucked through the windshield by some pincer-bearing creature that tosses him down and in front of a freight train. He awakens fine and intact at his desk job in some business firm. Loaded up with work and more work delivered by a co-worker named Jenny (Christina Cole), he stays late to get all of his reports done. On his walk home, a man acting like he's been terrorized, rushes past him only to die 30 meters later in the arms of a crowd of people. Back at his cool loft flat, he can barely concentrate; but then his girlfriend, Medea (Jaime Murray) comforts him.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Juno (2007) [PG-13] 96 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.75
Fans of writer / director Jason Reitman's irreverent, biting, deeply satisfying satirical comedyThank You For Smoking need be prepared for something totally different in Juno. One of the more singular character driven comedies of the year, Juno features actress Ellen Page, most wickedly known in Indie circles as the girl from Hard Candy and to the non-Indie crowd as the trouble-making Kitty Pryde from X-men: The Last Stand--the latter being a far less exemplary example of her talent than the former to be sure, as a high school girl who finds herself positively pregnant after a casual, one-evening encounter with this boy she kind of knew from the track team named Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). In conversations with her very best friend, Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno becomes convinced not only to keep the baby, but to find some nice parents for it in the Penny Saver under "Desperately Seeking Spawn" as Leah jokes. Her working class parents, Mac MacGuff (J.K.Simmons) and Bren (Allison Janney) take the news of her pregnancy with subdued shock actually hoping that her big announcement will be she's in hard drugs or something, but not this. The Penny Saver leads Juno to Mark (Jason Bateman) and Vanessa Loring (Jennifer Garner)—a 'happily' married couple that has been trying to conceive a child and then, after numerous failures, trying to adopt a baby for a long time. Upon meeting the couple, Juno feels she's found just the 'perfect' people to take over the responsibility of her baby. The rest of the story deals with Juno's emotional states, strengths and weaknesses, joys and sorrows as she works through the stigma of being an unwed, pregnant, juvenile.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Ocean's Thirteen (2007) [PG-13] 113 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.75
Review-lite: Directed by Steven Soderbergh who has helmed all three Ocean's films, Thirteen returns to its roots in Las Vegas. Danny Ocean (George Clooney) is back with revenge on his mind with his usual suspects and a new target villain, Willie Banks (Al Pacino). Banks as swindled mentor Reuben Tiskoff (Elliot Gould), and only Ocean's Thirteen can rescue him from his downward spiral. While the writing team of Brian Koppelman and David Levien accomplished something great, a superior film to Ocean's Twelve—wait, that was a terrible film—in creating this script, they unfortunately load the story with too much setup time and not enough execution time. The result is a film long on inside jokes but short on intrigue. Al Pacino is great in his best role in a long, long time; and Ellen Barkin turns up as his assistant. The result is good performances in a good but not great film.(click for full details and complete review)(click to purchase Ratatouille)
