Movie Review of One Missed Call (2008) [PG-13] 87 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $4.00
Looking for the spawn of a hybrid between Final Destination and The Grudge? If so, then you're at the right place…Eric Valette's One Missed Call should fit the bill just perfectly. The only problem is that one would have to wonder why you were looking for such a thing? Do you have a thing for malevolent ghost films? Again, if you do, this is your ticket. Only, be forewarned this one is not quite the caliber, plot-wise, mostly because this has pretty much all been done before. Some people refer to this as unimaginative, recycled, derivative, or just plain over-done. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of The Great Debaters (2007) [PG-13] 123 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.50
It may have come as some what of a surprise when the Golden Globe Awards for the film year 2007 were announced, and Denzel Washington's The Great Debaters was listed among the seven films nominated for Best Picture in the Dramatic category. Upon seeing the film, though, all surprise should quickly dissipate. This is not only the right film for Mr. Washington—unlike his atypical performance and contributions to American Gangster—to act in, but also for him to direct. From start to end, this unlikely story about the first all-black college in the United States to ever be invited to debate the national collegiate debate champions, packs powerful performances and brilliant speeches that were honestly the first ones I've ever heard applauded during a movie along with receiving one "Amen!". Not only does the film introduce cross-examination, collegiate debate style to the masses, it serves well as a worthy reminder of the societal wrongs that can commence when groups of people presume superiority over others.…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) [R] 86 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.00
The first thing to like about Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem is the name and the tag line. Any film with the word 'requiem' which means, in this case, "a song or hymn of mourning composed or performed as a memorial to a dead person", in the title, has got to be good, right? Recall, Requiem for a Dream, for example. As for the tag line which began appearing on posters, "This Christmas there will be no peace on Earth," what's not to love about the creativity of that line? Well, other than the obvious fact that many within the Christian faith are growing weary of seeing one of their most sacred holidays being used in movie tag lines. The second thing to like is the story. Now, it might sound odd to be heralding a story about Aliens and Predators when there are brilliant scripts out there like the one for Juno or Lars and the Real Girl or even Walk Hard, but give this one a small chance to present its case. What the writer, Shane Salerno, has done with this opportunity is to create a rather compelling fable. And what better time for fables, then the winter holiday season. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007) [PG] 111 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $9.00
The folks at Walden Media who brought us, and won't ever seem to let us forget it, the film version of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, have been 'hurriedly' scurrying about seemingly with the goal of adapting every piece of literature having anything to do with children to the big screen. The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep based on Dick King-Smith's book is the most recent. Whether the fault of the adaptation by Robert Nelson Jacobs or the original story itself (apologies for I haven't read it), the film version is sadly lacking on many fronts. The film story unfolds as an elderly gentlemen in a pub, who all-too-predictably turns out to be the elder version of the story's main character Angus MacMorrow (Brian Cox), invites to wayward travelers to hear a fantastic tale of the origins of the Loch Ness monster. As they listen, he flashes back on his childhood to the days when he found the alabaster-covered egg that eventually hatches into the flipper-finned, waddling sea creature of legend and how he became Crusoe's closest friend.…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of P.S. I Love You (2007) [PG-13] 126 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
Be forewarned that while P.S. I Love You is the romantic comedy of the holiday season, it is also the romantic tragedy. Co-writer / Director Richard LaGravenese seems to have a knack for pushing Hilary Swank in new directions as demonstrated when the two paired up for one of the 2007's least known great movies, Freedom Writers which came out in January which he also wrote and directed. This time, he and Steven Rogers adapted Cecelia Ahern's novel for the big screen. The result, while definitely a Hilary Swank vehicle, is a bittersweet tale of love from beyond the grave—not in a supernatural way, in a "your dead husband leaves behind letters for you to receive after his is unexpectedly diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor" kind of way.…continued…or read the spoiler points…

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $08.75
Review-lite: Resident Evil: Extinction—perhaps the title implies the direction of the film franchise a little too well. The disappointing ending left fans in the midnight preview stunned for it either guarantees a sequel or is one of the most unfufilling endings to a film franchise ever leaving major loose ends. Russell Mulchay helmed this installment; and, therefore, the humanistic elements of Alice (Milla Jovovich) are more omnipresent than the previous two films. Give her credit, Jovovich has created one of the most powerful and enduring female heroines of the past decade despite the less than brilliant screenplays. This outing, focuses on Alice's reunion with Carlos (Oded Fehr) as part of a caravan run by Claire ("Heroes" star Ali Larter). The caravan elects to journey to Alaska based on Alice's hope they can find refuge there at last. Unfortunately, Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) might have other plans for them.
