Movie Review of The Bucket List (2007) [PG-13] 97 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
Unrealistic—probably. Silly special effect green screen travel scapes—likely. Unbelievable activities by people who've just undergone intensive chemotherapy—doubtless. Platitudes galore and another film the opens with magnanimous voiceover by Morgan Freeman—definitely. And yet, The Bucket List, when taken at its core can have a miraculous impact on one's soul, if you let it. If you're looking for reasons not to get anything out of it, you probably won't, and you'll probably be better off taking your hypercritical skepticism to see There Will Be Blood. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of The Orphanage (2007) [R] 100 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
Juan Antonio Bayona's El Orfanato (The Orphanage) is more reminiscent of Nicole Kidman's The Others than Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, still, the film is an exceptionally good and well-made scary ghost movie. Featuring the lead talent of Spanish actress Belén Rueda as Laura, the mother of an adopted, HIV+ boy named Simón (oger Príncep), she and her husband, Carlos (Fernando Cayo), have just purchased and moved into an enormous mansion-style old home with a storied history—namely, it used to be the orphanage where Laura resided as a child until she was adopted. Sadly, she was one of the few to leave as the others, generally either too old or possessing various physical differences thought to be challenging for adoptive parents to handle at the time. Excited to be adopting as many as five or six more children to give them a stable family unit, Laura and Carlos, a physician, are embarking on the fulfillment of one of her life-long dreams. Yet, no sooner does the family move in then, of course, some unexplained things start to happen. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of First Sunday (2008) [PG-13] 96 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $3.00
It may be too early to deem a film worst of the year given that it's the 11th of January, but First Sunday has all of the makings to rank among the bottom feeders for even worst of the decade. The film is not only just plain poorly done in almost every aspect of filmmaking, the messages, social stereotypes, and retrospectively backwards themes should make this film on the most outrageous film's list—and not Borat sense of the term. Just when genius filmmaker Tyler Perry starts to make inroads into serious dramedy queued for an African-American audience but which transcend ethnic heritage and speak universal truths, this horrendously awful and regressive film starring the badly in need of a new agent, Ice Cube—this being his second 'not so great film' in a row—and Tracy Morgan—as two of the most hapless and non-role model characters ever held up as role models in a film of this kind. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of There Will Be Blood (2007) [R] 158 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
From the opening chord to the final credits roll, Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood based on Upton Sinclair's Oil! feels ominous and foreboding. Like a needle in the mind though, something seems off in that which remains in the thoughts after the film's torrential performance by Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview subsides. Here's how it goes, the film starts, a little like 2001: A Space Odyssey with dread-filling dialog-free segment as Plainview struggles to get ore from a mine he's staked, breaks his leg in a terrible fall, and worms his way along the ground to get his results assayed. It's 1902, and this is a great or bad time to be a prospector depending on the combination of skills at play and good, old-fashioned luck. His hard work pays off over time as he learns the ropes in the booming new oil business and scores a couple of lively wells. His world turns upside down, however, when a visit from a truly odd little bird named Paul Sunday (Paul Dano) arrives to lure him to the promised land of oil and honey. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of One Missed Call (2008) [PG-13] 87 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $4.00
Looking for the spawn of a hybrid between Final Destination and The Grudge? If so, then you're at the right place…Eric Valette's One Missed Call should fit the bill just perfectly. The only problem is that one would have to wonder why you were looking for such a thing? Do you have a thing for malevolent ghost films? Again, if you do, this is your ticket. Only, be forewarned this one is not quite the caliber, plot-wise, mostly because this has pretty much all been done before. Some people refer to this as unimaginative, recycled, derivative, or just plain over-done. …continued…or read the spoiler points

3:10 to Yuma (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.50
Review-lite: James Mangold's directs Christian Bale and Russell Crowe in this tour-de-force remake. Casting, scenery, gorgeous wild west settings outstanding to superstar performances, great gun fights, and a final suspense-filled fifteen minutes from 3 o'clock to fifteen after that will rivet even the most jaded to his or her seat. The ending plays a morality twist a whole herd of people are going to find hard to believe. To get it, to accept it, to own it, they may have to see the film at least a second time paying ever so close attention again to this character triangle between a father, a son, and an admired outlaw and the way in which the three impact each other's lives. 3:10 to Yuma stands out as an early front-runner in the pursuit of Academy Award® hardware and the odds on favorite, to date, for Best Picture of the Year.
