Movie Review of Meet the Spartans (2008) [PG-13] 84 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $5.75
Better than their first epic film spoof appropriately entitled Epic Movie, co-writers and co-directors Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg unleash their slimey mayem this time focusing their spoofery around one of last year's most artistically forgotten films, 300, with their version called Meet the Spartans. Oh, and they target two other things: reality TV show hosts and celebrities that cannot seem to stay out of the news for trying like Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears, Mr. and Mrs. Jolie, and Lindsay Lohan. Some things to know prior to settling down with a full combo meal: there's going to be a lot of slime spewed, there are going to be gross out jokes filled with squishy slime stuff, and some make-up transformed lepers are going to lick a young woman's cheek. Those are just givens in the Selt-berg screenplays. The story? The story follows the same story as 300, pretty much frame by frame, but with wider latitudes on the actual historical representations, as in pretty much everyone has a cell phone, and more pointed homoeroticism as in the way Spartan men greet each other is with open mouthed kisses and women with a high five. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Untraceable (2008) [R] 100 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $9.75
Director Gregory Hoblit, the guy behind last year's semi-botched Hopkins-Gosling murder mystery, Fracture, attempts again a film, Untraceable, in the genre of murder, only this time the subject is a special FBI Cyber Crime taskforce as it works to thwart criminal masterminds who do their nasty business via the Internet. Baggage-laden widow Agent Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane) and her trusty sidekick and close friend Agent Griffin Dowd (Colin Hanks) are at the top of their game. The film opens with them snaring a cyber criminal who uses a series of techniques to swipe people's entire directory of passwords and then steal all their money. Don't worry if you're not sure how he does this, Agent Marsh explains not only how but her step-by-step method of how she catches him doing it to Agent Dowd in one of the film's more inexplicable scenes as he, being a similarly gifted F.B.I. agent, would not need to have her explanation. They work nights, so she gets home from work just in time to share some curt comments with her live-in mother Stella (Mary Beth Hurt) and walk her not-too-bright, 8-year old daughter Annie (Perla Haney-Jardine) to the school bus stop a few blocks from home. She looks painfully weary throughout the entire film so it's difficult to tell when she's really stressed—might be now, might not. The next evening, though, a new cyber criminal will emerge in her life that will push her to her darkest hour. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of 27 Dresses (2008) [PG-13] 107 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $9.75
Whether because once one becomes addicted to Judd Apatow approved comedy one just cannot go back or because the plot has been done in one form or another 27 times, 27 Dresses just begs to be hung back up in the closet with it's dusty, bridesmaid dress cousins. Directed by Anne Fletcher from a screenplay by Aline Brosh McKenna, it's so odd that neither noticed that their film couldn't have been more formulaic had they just actually taken the scripts from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and My Best Friends Wedding put them in a fancy new Food Processor from William Sonoma right off the wedding gift list, puréed on high for 15 minutes, and changed the names of the characters around a bit. Sadly, that's basically how 27 Dresses plays out. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Mad Money (2008) [PG-13] 104 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $9.50
Did you ever hear the expression, "Don't get mad, get even"? It applies dually to Callie Khouri's Mad Money starring Diane Keaton, Katie Holmes, and Queen Latifah. First, the story is about one woman's 'madness'—as in loopy—emerging out of her 'being mad'—as in angry—at a society that permits her and her husband to amass a lavish lifestyle that hinges on his large income which evaporates over night when he's downsized. The second application of the expression may arise in people being prompted, in advance, just to skip this film thereby saving anger, frustration, irritation of having spend hard-earned money to see it. The getting even part comes in the form of poor box-office turning into, hopefully, a push for better material for audiences that deserve better.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Cloverfield (2008) [PG-13] 90 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.00
10:15 PM 2 July 2007 Hello. I just got home from seeing Transformers, which was amazing. But, one thing I don't want to forget was a trailer I saw for some new movie coming out soon. It was scary and eerie. The Statue of Liberty's head goes flying. That's all I know. It was crazy. Stay tuned.

2:17 AM 18 January 2008Hello again. Crazy. Just got back from seeing Cloverfield directed by Matt Reeves from a script by "LOST" meister Drew Goddard. Actually, there were more people in the theatre tonight for the 11:59 p.m. showing than there were for HP: OotP or for Transformers for that matter. The mood of the audience before the trailers was palpable. Though, admittedly, it wasn't clear how many were there to see Cloverfield and how many were there to see the much-anticipated sneak trailer for the new J.J. Abrams new Star Trek film. As the trailers clicked by, the audience got increasingly quiet until the Leonard Nimoy's voice rang through the loudspeakers. There was a roar. Sorry to report that the trailer gives little other than an assurance of a December release date for the film. The overly expositive trailer for Jumper, however, either gives away too much or was great at increasing anticipation for that film out mid-February. Then, there was dead silent anticipation. No film has received this much Internet hype since Snakes on a Plane—oops, we know how that turned out—disaster. …continued…or read the spoiler points

The Game Plan (2007) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: Director Andy Flickman takes Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard's screen play, The Game Plan, and turns into one of the best early autumn 2007 films for the entire family. There's nothing that fancy here, just a really good story, with some nice twists and gender bending quotients, along with just enough comedy and drama to tickle the funny bone and tug at the heartstrings. Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the fictional Boston football team's illustrious quarterback, Joe Kingman, who suddenly finds himself a single father of a love's to dance and use her Bedazzler® to jewel-encrust everything little girl named Peyton (Madison Pettis). The two must learn to love each other and fast because Joe's career may depend on it, and Peyton has nowhere else to go. (click for full details and complete review)(click to purchase The Game Plan)
