Movie Review of Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (2008) [PG-13] 114 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
Welcome home Martin Lawrence! As much as Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins is really a Malcolm D. Lee project as writer and director, the film relies almost entirely on the comedic and facial expression talents of comedian / actor Martin Lawrence for this family dramedy to work and it does. Of course, the often hilarious film also benefits from some outstanding comedic performances from Mo'Nique, Mike Eps, and Cedric the Entertainer and warm, personable, and charming performances from the legendary James Earl Jones and Margaret Avery. If all else fails, season things up with a super-sized performance from Michael Clarke Duncan playing out of type as a loveable town sheriff instead of an action superhero and you've got the icing for your red velvet cake. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Shrooms (2008) [NR] 84 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $7.00
Irish director, Paddy Breathnach's cult horror film, Shrooms, has actually been around for a while but is finally enjoying a limited run in the USA at art house theatres and the like. Featuring a young cast of mostly USAers who travel to Ireland to escape their lives and mental pressures by exploring the famous mushrooms of the countryside. Their guide, local Jake (Jack Huston), picks them up at the airport in his minibus and then transports them to a huge park for camping and 'shroom' harvesting. In explaining the choice of mushrooms to pick, he makes a very big mistake. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Fool's Gold (2008) [PG-13] 113 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $7.25
You know what happens when you put cotton candy in water? The same thing as when you put Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson in another sugary fluff romance comedy—it / they dissolve(s) into thin air. First off, there's almost no actor in Fool's Gold, with the possible exception of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who's worthy of this degree of banality or contrived drivel. And, Mr. Warner only because if he was willing to take a ridiculous role like this requiring him to issue the most pathetic, fake Jamaican accent of all time, then, well, he deserves what he got. Second, Mr. McConaughey could be a legendary actor if he'd stick to dramas. It might be fun to hang out on boats, be barefoot and shirtless all the time, but there's literally no comparing the outstanding nature of his role in the highly overlooked We Are Marshall to his role in this film. He really is an incredibly talented actor. He should leave roles like these to Paul Walker—wait…wasn't Paul Walker the guy from Into the Blue about a surfer dude treasure hunter who keeps letting his girl down by getting involved with the wrong types of guys to get loans for equipment to hunt amazing treasure? Déjà Vu? As in Fool's Gold is virtually the same plot only Kate Hudson subs for Jessica Alba. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Wild West Comedy Show (2008) [R] 100 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $5.00
Fans of Vince Vaughn can rejoice in the philanthropic nature of their dramedy hero who got one of his breaks on an "After School Special" about steroids in which he starred with now life-long friend, Peter Billingsley (still best known for his role as Ralphie in A Christmas Story) or so we learn as part of the Oscar®-winning director Ari Sandel's documentary of Mr. Vaughn's 30-day comedy tour. The idea, apparently, was for Vaughn to headline a 30-day road trip tour for four semi-known or unknown comics. Their notion is that stand-up is having tough times right now, and this will help these guys get an opportunity to get noticed. Probably anyone would gamble on the idea that a documentary of the trip would be a great thrill for there would be antics galore, hilarious inside information, and real Vince Vaughn—an actor who is pretty universally adored by both genders in both outrageously good fun comedy like Wedding Crashers and psycho thrillers like…um…Psycho (the remake). All these gamblers would have lost a lot of money.

Movie Review of The Kite Runner (2007) [PG-13] 122 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.25
Acclaimed director adapts Khaled Hosseini's best-selling novel The Kite Runner into a film that doubtfully had inspired high box-office if not award nominations from the day of green-lighting the film. Unfortunately, while the film is thought provoking and engaging, as is often the case in book-to-film translation much of the poignant story that so consumes its readers the film falls short in many ways. For those unaware of the basic elements of the story, it focuses on the life of the lead character, Amir (adult: Khalid Abdalla / youth: Zekeria Ebrahimi) whose tumultuous life takes him and his father (his mother dies in labor) from their beloved Afghanistan to San Francisco when the Soviets invade.…continued…or read the spoiler points…

Across the Universe (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.50
Review-lite: Worthy of being declared a National Treasure, director Julie Taymor transforms 33 Beatles song into a incredible new musical motion picture experience truly unlike anything you've ever seen. Fan of the Beatles or not, never before have the lyrics of the songs of one group been used in this way to assemble a cinematic musical exploration of a decade in American history. Visually stunning, the film captures all of human emotions transcending its medium and evolving in a revolutionary way into something powerfully uplifting. While it does fail to truly envelope the horror of the Vietnam war and the long-term damage it to the American psyche, in every other way the film scores nearly perfectly and stands to make bona fide stars out of the entire cast especially Evan Rachel Wood, Joe Anderson, and Jim Sturgess. Assassination of Jesse James (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.25
Review-lite: Casey Affleck stands out as a giant among men as he delivers the performance of his career, maybe his lifetime, as the 30-year old plays the 19-year old, Robert Ford, infamous in his own right for executing in cold blood the outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt). The story begins near the end of Jesse's wild ride as a vigilante outlaw justified in his own mind. As he grows in his paranoia that he will be turned in by his own men for the sizeable bounty on his head, James meanders in his trust in the young wannabe Ford. Directed by Andrew Dominik, the film is long and introspective in its way with both Affleck and Pitt at the top of their acting game. Lack of studio support will be the film's downfall on top of the reality that USAers typically don't want to see a film about a perceived coward.
