Movie Review of Baby Mama (2008) [PG-13] 96 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.25
Tina Fey is hot, hot, hot right now, so whom better to cast in the role of an aging female corporate executive with an unlikable uterus (at least according to "I'm a PC" John Hodgman who plays, in this case a cameo role as the fertility specialist") who seeks out the help of surrogacy center to treat her lack-of-baby-itis. Kate Holbrook, vice president of Round Earth Markets, a Whole Foods-esque company founded by Barry (Steve Martin) whose grey pony tail and meta-baloney wisdom are about all we need to know to know this guy. Kate is his rock, bringing his ideas back down to the real world (and not the MTV kind, the real actual world). So as her life ebbs and flows from great promotion to more working evenings, her biological clock too has been ticking away. Her sister Caroline (Maura Tierney) has both a husband and kids, and this is now all that Kate wants or thinks about, having a baby, the husband is now optional. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of Deception (2008) [R] 108 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.00
Deception might well be the moniker for the advertising campaign for the film that most certainly deceives but not, unfortunately, in the ways fans of mystery thrillers enjoy. If you've witnessed the trailer, you've seen a more exciting and thrilling short film than the feature film could ever hope to be--deceit number 1. If you thought because it stars Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor, and Michelle Williams it would be a good film—deceit number 2. If you thought, based on the preview trailer, the film would be a fascinating mind game type movie—deceit number 3—for the film is neither fascinating nor a good mind game. First, the film is nearly as hopelessly dull as the characters and their lifeless portrayals. Second, while the film might not be as predictable as the aforementioned statements might tend to make one think, it's still highly predictable and not even terribly sneaky about planting the bread crumbs useable to predict not only the 'twist' but the ending as well.…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of The Wackness (2008) [R] 108 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.50
Words to live by…try to find the good in life instead of just looking at all 'the wackness'. 'Wackness' derived apparently from the expression "that's so wack" which might be short for "wacky". In any case, such is both the title and philosophy of Jonathan Levine's independent feature, The Wackness starring Ben Kingsley, Famke Janssen, Josh Peck, and Olivia Thirlby or so the credits have them ordered. Actually, Josh Peck, most recently seen as the thug kid's best friend in Drillbit Taylor, is the real star and soul of the film, and boy is this 'kid' something. Forget Drillbit Taylor (sorry Owen), for not only was it not that great of a film, but it relegated one of the truly great actors in the film, at least based on what he does in The Wackness, to (pardon the expression but) a drill-bit part. With soulful eyes reflecting both an innocence yet fortitude, the young Mr. Peck bounds onto the screen and into this role of Luke Shapiro--recent HS grad and current 4:20 delivery boy using an Italian Ice cart as his mobile cover store front--like a St. Bernard puppy that's not quite realized his own strength. With a sneerful smile and baby dimples, his self-effacing character's got "adore me" written all over him despite his nefarious career choice of the moment. …continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of 88 Minutes (2008) [R] 108 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
Exceptionally taught, the psychological thriller 88 Minutes proves a lot of things about the great Al Pacino—he's still got it: he can run like the dickens at age 68, he can woo women 1/3 his age, and no matter how crazy his hair looks, he manages to look suave not scatter-brained. Held up seemingly forever in release date limbo, this Jon Avnet directed tribute to cell phone technology and forensic psychiatry run amok has a running time of 108 minutes despite that which might be teased by the title. Just when Dr. Jack Gramm's life couldn't get any more complicated, the illustrious professor (Al Pacino) receives a call from an anonymous caller indicating he has but 88 minutes to live. This after he's just been told and potentially implicated in a copy-cat murder executed in the precise fashion of a serial murderer and rapist named Jon Forster (Neal McDonough) his expert testimony helped put away for life and on to a potential death sentence.…continued…or read the spoiler points…
Movie Review of The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) [PG-13] 113 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.00
Director Rob Minkoff, last known for directing Disney's The Haunted Mansion and writer John Fusco last known for writing the screenplay for Hidalgo join forces with two of the greatest martial arts legends of our time, Jet Li and Jackie Chan, to bring to life a fish out of water tale about an adolescent boy named Jason Tripitikas (Michael Angarano) who, upon finding a long lost magical fighting staff in a South Boston Chinese pawn shop run by Old Hop (Jackie Chan), finds himself suddenly thrust from the clutches of murderous neighborhood bullies into an ancient time, ancient battle, and struggle between the forces of good and evil in ancient China. …continued…or read the spoiler points…

Cloverfield (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Director Matt Reeves delivers a January wake up call with this mysterious event film. No longer a mystery, the Internet hype is over. The secret is out. A creature attacks Manhattan leaving a wake of destruction in its path. The film is made to look as though its shot on a home videocam by one member of a group of 20-somethings which yields a singularly unsteady cinematic experience not to be watched by those made easily sea-sick. The film is either an unqualified masterpiece or a redundant disaster film depending on your point of view. You might just have to see it to find out which it is for you. The Orphanage (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.75
Review-lite: Juan Antonio Bayona's El Orfanato (The Orphanage) is more reminiscent of Nicole Kidman's The Others than Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, still, the film is an exceptionally good and well-made scary ghost movie. Featuring the talent of Spanish actress Belén Rueda, the story focuses on the mysterious events surrounding the disappearance of a couple's adopted son, Simón who goes missing one day at a party they are hosting for more children they intend to adopt. Part ghost story, part tragic mystery, Sergio G. Sánchez's screenplay provided bone-tingling scares making this one of the best scary movies and international films of the year.
