Movie Review of Made of Honor (2008) [PG-13] 101 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $10.75
Hmm, a 'chick-flick' with a twist? The twist is that Made of Honor, directed by Paul Weiland from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel, Deborah Kaplan, and Harry Elfon, is really sort of from a guy's perspective. Scratching your head? How about the marketing efforts for this film? It was one of the first new posters up in theaters in January, and the marketing blitz has been non-stop since. Which usually means one of two things: the producers spent a lot of money on the film and are worried it won't do well…or…the producers spent a lot of money on the film and they are really, really proud of it. One would think that simply the casting of Dr. McDreamy aka Patrick Dempsey (remember back in the day when he was being seduced by Kirstie Alley in Loverboy?) would cause this film to leap to the top of the box office charts with no marketing money spent at all. Well, unfortunately, not wishing to be the bearer of the not so great news, but as much as a 'chick flick' from the male perspective might have seemed like a great idea to Adam Sztykiel (he's the guy credited with the story idea) and subsequently to everyone else who got on board (bored) with this concept, at least this guy's perspective fails to do the one thing all good 'chick flicks' must do, and that is make you cry tears of sadness and then joy.…continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Iron Man (2008) [PG-13] 126 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.00
Even though the trailer looked intriguing, probably most fans of comic book superheroes turned into major motion pictures was skeptical or maybe guarded is a better word when it came to expectations for Iron Man. With all due respect to Mr. Stan Lee and Co., Iron Man has never captured quite the following as say Batman or Spider-man. Well, that's too bad, because Iron Man is one awesome superhero in the first truly awesome movie of 2008. It's fitting that Iron Man would open what is on course to be the best blockbuster summer of movies EVER with Speed Racer, Indiana Jones 4, Chronicles of Narnia 2, Wall-E, The Incredible Hulk, and The Dark Knight to follow soon. Fitting because it's got everything one could ever hope for in a superhero movie, strike that, blockbuster, spectacle, summer-time movie, in general. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008) [R] 102 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $3.00
When American Pie hit theatres, it was fresh, hilarious, and different. Doubtful it's irreverent creators would predict they had spawned a film genre. Unfortunately, no one has ever come close, not even they with their AP sequels, to re-creating the brilliance of the original, and now with Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (H&K2) it's time to close the coffin on this dead end genre as the films keep getting worse and worse. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Baby Mama (2008) [PG-13] 96 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.25
Tina Fey is hot, hot, hot right now, so whom better to cast in the role of an aging female corporate executive with an unlikable uterus (at least according to "I'm a PC" John Hodgman who plays, in this case a cameo role as the fertility specialist") who seeks out the help of surrogacy center to treat her lack-of-baby-itis. Kate Holbrook, vice president of Round Earth Markets, a Whole Foods-esque company founded by Barry (Steve Martin) whose grey pony tail and meta-baloney wisdom are about all we need to know to know this guy. Kate is his rock, bringing his ideas back down to the real world (and not the MTV kind, the real actual world). So as her life ebbs and flows from great promotion to more working evenings, her biological clock too has been ticking away. Her sister Caroline (Maura Tierney) has both a husband and kids, and this is now all that Kate wants or thinks about, having a baby, the husband is now optional. …continued…or read the spoiler points

Movie Review of Deception (2008) [R] 108 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.00
Deception might well be the moniker for the advertising campaign for the film that most certainly deceives but not, unfortunately, in the ways fans of mystery thrillers enjoy. If you've witnessed the trailer, you've seen a more exciting and thrilling short film than the feature film could ever hope to be--deceit number 1. If you thought because it stars Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor, and Michelle Williams it would be a good film—deceit number 2. If you thought, based on the preview trailer, the film would be a fascinating mind game type movie—deceit number 3—for the film is neither fascinating nor a good mind game. First, the film is nearly as hopelessly dull as the characters and their lifeless portrayals. Second, while the film might not be as predictable as the aforementioned statements might tend to make one think, it's still highly predictable and not even terribly sneaky about planting the bread crumbs useable to predict not only the 'twist' but the ending as well.…continued…or read the spoiler points

The Golden Compass (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: Written and directed by Chris Weitz from award-winning author Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass scores in drawing one in to the mythology of the story set up by the narrator who reveals a world in a parallel universe where the souls of people manifest themselves outside the body in the form of archetypal, talking animals called dœmons; the world is ruled by the Magisterium; and there's a secret connecting element between all living things known as dust. The story begins dramatically with the heroine, Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) saving her uncle, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) from being poisoned. Without sticking entirely to the plot of the first book, the first film, featuring Nicole Kidman as the wicked Mrs. Coulter, provides excellent effects and non-stop, fantasy-driven, epic adventure that may be too scary for young children. 27 Dresses (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.75
Review-lite: Whether because once one becomes addicted to Judd Apatow approved comedy one just cannot go back or because the plot has been done in one form or another 27 times, 27 Dresses just begs to be hung back up in the closet with it's dusty, bridesmaid dress cousins. It's odd that neither the director nor writer noticed that their film couldn't have been more formulaic had they just actually taken the scripts from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and My Best Friends Wedding put them in a fancy new Food Processor from William Sonoma right off the wedding gift list, puréed on high for 15 minutes, and changed the names of the characters around a bit. Sadly, that's basically how 27 Dresses plays out despite some charming performances by Katherine Heigl as the perennial bridesmaid and James Marsden as her soul mate in disguise.
